Brazilian capital of mountain biking, Araxá is the safest city in Minas Gerais

The survey took into account Brazilian cities with more than 100 thousand inhabitants, with the national capital of mountain biking as a highlight in the Top 10 in the country

In an exclusive MySide yearbook, in which data was collected from the Mortality Monitoring Panel of the Health and Environmental Surveillance Secretariat (SVSA) and the IBGE Census to provide a reliable analysis of the cities that stand out in terms of safety, Araxá stood out in the Minas Gerais State as the safest city among municipalities with more than 100 thousand inhabitants. And, in a broader scope, the highlight also remains, with a classification in the Top 10 nationally, being the ninth city in the ranking.

And this gains even more importance, since between the months of March and April 2025, the city will once again become the world capital of mountain biking, hosting three major events in sequence: the opening of the Copa Internacional de MTB, between March 28th and 30th, and two first stages of the next season of the WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series, the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in the Short Track (XCC) and Olympic Cross Country (XCO) modalities, on the 3rd to 6th April (first stage) and April 10th to 13th (second stage).

The rate recorded in Araxá is 3.6 homicides per 100 thousand inhabitants. This gives the municipality great prominence in the state of Minas Gerais, just ahead of Varginha and Muriaé, with rates of 5.7 and 7.6, respectively, on the list of safest cities. In fact, Minas Gerais ranks fifth among the safest states in Brazil – with a rate of 19.9 violent deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

According to the yearbook created by MySide, a company specializing in technology and services in the real estate sector: “The main indicator used to classify cities was the number of murders per 100,000 inhabitants. This indicator is widely recognized as a solid and universal measure of public safety. International organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), use this rate in their reports, considering it essential for regional and temporal comparisons. This indicator allows the absolute number of homicides to be adjusted according to the size of the population, facilitating comparative analyzes and the formulation of effective public policies”.
